New Vehicle Defaults

When a new vehicle is created in new Vehicle Stockbooks via the Vehicle Administration program, certain fields can be pre-set to fixed values by having them set up in a new vehicle template or default record, which effectively becomes part of the record layout when creating a new vehicle.

You will be able to proceed through the available fields on the screen, entering default values where required. There is no validation of input on the default record and therefore, will not actually provide a list of valid codes.

This point raises the question of the philosophy behind default values. If for example a dealership has only one branch within a Vehicle Stockbook 'company' then it would be sensible to default on to the purchase brief, the physical location, and on the sales brief the selling location, as it can only ever be one value.

If however a default is only true in the majority of circumstances, say 90% of the time, and it is important that it be corrected to the alternative values in the 10% where it is not the default value, it may be better to leave the default as blank in order that you are forced to think about which code to enter.
