The Locator definition form is displayed when the Locator definition option is selected fro the DD SYSTEM MAINTENANCE menu.
This program allows the system administrator to define the first sixteen characters from defined elements of the franchise, model, variant.
The first digit of the locator code is equal to the single-digit franchise letter of the vehicle (see Franchise codes).
The second element is the first five digits of the vehicle model group code (see Model codes).
The third element is the first six digits of the vehicle variant code, the fourth element the engine cubic capacity in hundreds of c.c., the fifth element the body style, with sixth and final element being the number of doors (all of these elements are covered in Variant codes).
Although there are only six user defined elements in this example, as can be seen there from the number of lines for definition entry, there is capacity to define up to ten elements, subject to the limit of sixteen characters.
Once these have been defined, you can then define for each of the sixteen digits what type of character can be entered at that point. There are three possibilities as follows:
A - Alpha character only in the range A to Z.
# - Numeric character only in the range 0 to 9.
X - Any character, alpha or numeric, or even a symbol.
So in the previous example, the franchise code and the body style must be alpha characters, the c.c. rating and door configuration must be numerics, and the model and variant codes can contain any characters.
