Checking Global Partitions

The Global partition status form contains information on active users and processes on the system enabling you to manage the database performance.

What do you want to do?

Global Partition Status Form

The Global partition status form is displayed when you select System Utilities > Display Users.

Menu Bar and Toolbar:

Menu bar Toolbar Action
File > Exit Exit Returns you to the System utilities menu
Tools > Refresh Refresh Updates the form with your amendments.
Tools > Signal Signal Amongst other system administrator oriented tasks, this option enables you to terminate a user session or process on the system.
Tools > Message Message Enables you to send an instant message (such as a reminder to log out of the system) to a particular user or all users.
Tools > Snoop Snoop Depending on your user permissions snoop enables you to see what other users are accessing in the system. This is normally used for support purposes.

Sending an Urgent Message to All or Selected Users

Before you terminate a session, or process, or make amendments to the system that may affect another person's work, you should send details of the change to the affected user(s) using the Send Message to Partition(s) form. As opposed to a broadcast message, a message created this way appears instantaneously as a dialog box when the user attempts to access the system.

To send a message to a selected user:

  1. Select the user, that you want to send a message to, from the Partition Status Grid by clicking the relevant line.
  2. The partition and selected user is highlighted.

  3. Click the Message icon on the toolbar
  4. The Send Message to Partition(s) form is displayed.

  5. Select Current partition to send an instant message to the selected user.

    Note: Ensure you have selected the correct user before sending your message. The intended recipient is highlighted in the Partition status grid.

  6. Type your message and click OK to send your message or click Cancel to exit.

To send a message to a all users:

  1. Click the Message icon on the toolbar
  2. The Send Message to Partition(s) form is displayed.

  3. Select the All partitions option button to send an instant message to all users.
  4. Note: Selecting the All partitions option button disregards any partition highlights.

  5. Type your message and click OK to send your message or click Cancel to exit.

This form is displayed when you click System Utilities > Display Users > Message icon on the Global partition status form toolbar.

Partition Type

Option Buttons:

Current Partition: Send a message to the selected (highlighted) partition

All Partitions: Send a message to everyone on the system

Message: Free text area to type the details of your announcement

Terminating a User Session or System Process

To terminate a session or process

  1. Select the user, whose session you want to terminate, from the Partition Status Grid by clicking the relevant line.
  2. The partition and selected user is highlighted.

  3. Click the Signal icon on the toolbar.
  4. The Signal Process(es) form is displayed with Current Process and Terminate option buttons already selected.

  5. Click OK.
  6. The system terminates the partition process/user.

Using the Snoop function

Snoop is generally used for system support purposes, as a guidance tool. It enables an administrator, or someone with the correct access, to watch and give advice on a user's progress through the system.

To snoop

  1. Select the user, that you want to watch, from the Partition Status Grid by clicking the relevant line.
  2. The partition and selected user is highlighted.

  3. Click the Snoop icon
  4. Note: The Snoop icon is unavailable when the user is in a module that you do not have access to. A Pop-up message also indicates an invalid snoop request.

    The part of the system the user is in is displayed with the title of the form highlighted in red.

    Note: If the form that you are looking at contains a grid, the information that is within the grid is not displayed.

  5. To exit the snoop function click anywhere on the snoop form that you are looking at.
  6. You are returned to the Global Partition Status Form.
